Jay Baruchel talks about Filming Cosmopolis with Rob and David Cronenberg

FANG: You and your GOOD NEIGHBORS co-star Emily Hampshire appear in David Cronenberg’s latest, COSMOPOLIS. Can you talk about that and working for Cronenberg?

BARUCHEL: Again, this is a movie that I agreed to do without knowing what I’d be doing in it. (...) And then they said, “You want to go to Toronto and do two days on the new David Cronenberg?” I said, “I’ll pick up that man’s f**king dry cleaning.” I’ll do anything to meet him. He’s one of my original heroes. For a Canadian who wants to make horror movies for the rest of his life, there’s no greater hero or no more important figure than David Cronenberg. It was a very, very easy “yes” for me. And showing up there, once I got past the initial butterflies in my stomach and the jitters of not only getting to meet one of my heroes, but getting to work with him, that took some getting through because I was flabbergasted. Here I am, getting to watch him do his thing, in his environment. But once I was past that, it was the easiest job I’ve ever had. It was simple and fun and exciting and I could retire tomorrow because I’m in one of his flicks now.

FANG: Who do you play in COSMOPOLIS?

BARUCHEL: The thing is incredibly dense and ethereal and mostly it’s just dialogue heavy. It takes place in the early 2000s during a version of the dotcom boom. It follows Robert Pattinson’s character, who’s the CEO of one of these tech companies, and he’s on his way to work and he’s trying to get a haircut and that’s the movie. And 90 percent of it takes place in his limo en route to get a haircut. He has all these different meetings with people he works alongside, and they come in to the limo, he has a long, sort of philosophical conversation with them and they get out, they exchange seats, and I’m the first guy he picks up. I’m the guy who started the company with him, and I’m a young, rich, upwardly mobile tech head. We have a four-page long existential scene about the nature of 20th-century living and then I disappear. It was the most satisfying, interesting, exciting and every adjective in the book. It really, really nourished me. I know I’m a better actor, a better writer and a better person for it.

FANG : Vous et votre partenaire de Good Neighbours, Emily Hampshire ,apparaissez dans le dernier film de David Cronenberg, COSMOPOLIS. Pouvez vous parler de votre travail avec Cronenberg ?

BARUCHEL : Encore une fois, c'est un film que j'ai accepté de faire sans savoir ce que je ferais dedans. Je tenais compagnie à ma fiancée [Allison Pill] à Manhattan alors qu'elle faisait sa pièce de théâtre. Ma plus grande ambition était d'écrire un film d'horreur. Et c'est ce que j'ai choisi de faire après mon travail sur GOON [qu'il a co-écrit]. Mon co-équipier [Jesse Chabot] et moi, on a été embauché sur quelques projets et je n'avais pas du tout à l'esprit de passer devant la caméra cette année. Et puis ils ont dit : "Vous voulez aller à Toronto et tourner deux jours sur le nouveau David Cronenberg ?" J'ai dit : "J'irais chercher les vêtements de cet homme chez le teinturier s'il le fallait". Je ferais n'importe quoi pour le rencontrer. Il est un de mes héros. Pour un canadien qui veut faire des films d'horreur pour le reste de sa vie, il n'y a pas plus grand héros ou aucune personne plus importante que David Cronenberg. C'était un "Oui" très, très facile pour moi. Et en allant là bas, une fois que j'ai passé outre les papillons dans mon estomac et le trac non seulement de rencontrer un de mes héros, mais aussi de travailler avec lui, ça m'a pris du temps à réaliser parce que j'ai été sidéré. Me voilà donc, le regardant faire son truc, dans son environnement. Mais une fois que j'ai passé outre , c'est le job le plus facile que je n'ai jamais eu à faire. C'était simple et amusant et excitant et je pourrais partir à la retraite demain parce que je suis maintenant dans l'un de ses films.

FANG : Qui incarnez vous dans COSMOPOLIS ?

BARUCHEL : C'st incroyablement dense et fou et c'est surtout un dialogue très lourd. Le film se déroule au début des années 2000 au cours du boom de l'internet et de ses sociétés en ligne. On suit le personnage de Robert Pattinson, qui est le PDG de l'une de ces sociétés de nouvelle technologie, et il est sur le point d'aller travailler quand il cherche à se faire couper les cheveux et c'est le film. Et 90 % du film se déroule dans sa limousine en route pour un rendez vous chez le coiffeur. Il a toutes ces différentes réunions avec les gens avec qui il travaille et ils viennent dans la limousine, il a ces longues conversations philosophiques avec eux et ils s'en vont et ils changent de sièges et je suis le premier gars qu'il accueille. Je suis le gars avec qui il a démarré la société et je suis le jeune et riche dirigeant d'une société de technologie qui est en pleine ascension. Nous avons une longue scène existentielle de quatre pages sur la nature de la vie au XXe siècle et puis je disparais. C'était la scène la plus satisfaisante, intéressante, excitante et autre adjectif du livre. Ca a vraiment nourri mon esprit. Je sais que je suis un meilleur acteur, un meilleur auteur et une meilleure personne grâce à ça.
